A reliable way to enhance the properties of structural materials is to make them lighter without compromising their strength. Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) are perhaps the most prominent example of this approach. These plastics are made up of tiny, yet extremely strong threads of carbon atoms held together by a plastic matrix. Owing to their low weight, high durability, and exceptional mechanical performance, CFRP laminates are being incorporated into state-of-the-art aerospace applications, transportation, and construction. However, designing CFRP laminates can be a very time-consuming

Back in October 2020, my  CW  column provided an “insider’s perspective” into ASTM standards for composites, describing how the test standardization process takes place. I focused on ASTM Committee D30, which develops and maintains the standardized test methods for composite materials. The D30 committee consists of seven technical  Subcommittees , focusing on editorial and resource standards, constituent/precursor properties, lamina and laminate test methods, structural test methods

To address this issue, researchers have been exploring novel methods for pollutant removal. A recent study conducted by scientists from GH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, Poland, focused on the application of a mineral sorbent composite based on lignite and bentonite for the removal of surfactants, dyes, and pharmaceuticals (1). The study, published in the  Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy  journal, utilized infrared (IR) spectroscopy to investigate the sorption mechanisms involved in immobilizing the organic compounds onto the mineral composite sorbents

The company manufactures pinned weft plates for all makes and models of multiaxial machinery — including Karl Mayer, Liba and Malimo, Copmax, Maxtronic, etc. — and offers precision tooling, machinery, equipment and contract converting services for nano, micro and macro perforating of prepreg films, composite panels, laminates and more. The standard rotary method of perforating typically involves a pinned/needle roller or other tool that pushes against an anvil roll. The roller may be heated or run at room temperature. The web is sandwiched between these rollers, and the pins are forced th
